LEVIN DANGEROUSLY

It is now fall time here in NYC and things are really hot and crazy. With the tragedy of the WTC, thousands of lives lost, people crying for vengeance, and the talks of a possible war have the place a bit edgy right now; but as the saying goes “ WHAT IS ALREADY DONE CANT BE UNDONE” and there is nothing we can do to change it unless some one has a time machine? The only thing we as a nation could and should do is start living our lives as best as possible, so it’s time to pick up the pieces, regroup and move on by doing the things we love doing. Inside Scoop and DIV1 promises to turn up the “wick” a little more to try and bring you the latest yota stories and info as possible from the east cost and around the world. Things are moving a little slow since my typist quit on me. WHY? I wouldn’t let her join as an official DV1 member. WHY NOT? She drives a HONDA! THE NERVES OF HER! What would the “ TRUYOTA HEADS THINK”? Don’t worry though cause we “aint” about to leave you hanging; some one had to do it and that someone is me. It aint pretty but it’s being done. If I knew what I know now I would’ve paid more attention in typing class, cause this one finger jab is murder. Now I know what a shoaling monk goes through after stabbing at a coconut all day. On that note lets go back to Jamaica and check out this smooth looking super white slammed 88 Toyota Levin.

It always seems as if everyone out side the U.S gets all the goodies, not like the crap we get here. Due to pollution control we have to suffer with all these watered down detuned motors. For instance This car came with a stock 4age 16v big port Tvis motor producing between 122 to 135 hp depending on year; 10 to 23 more than the 112 crappy version we get here. These cars are also lighter than ours because of our heavier 5MPH impact bumper and other safety measures. I think in stock form this car could kick the shit out of our modified rollas. Sule, the present owner of the black 20v turbo, which was featured on the pages a while back, previously owned this slamming ride. The new proud happy daddy is now Dwayne, who is a very good friend of Sule. As you can see in this pic, Dwayne is all decked out in his tropical gears giving me the full “hundred” (scoop) on his baby. In the 1st pic had an Evo3 wing on the deck, but now it has a custom-touring wing in its place. If you look closely you will see that the front bumper was modified also. A local fiberglass specialist in the area made the new front skirt out of a mold from the original Evo3 front skirt. If you know what an Evo3 front looks like, you would know that the bottom lip is missing. You might also be wondering  “where are those beautiful 18” Koni Monsoons from 1st pic”? Dwayne told me that they were damaged from a previous pothole attack while he was on his way to the countryside. The only thing that stayed the same was the wicked drop. A lot of enthusiast young or old love the slammed look. Some drop their cars so low you would be able to set up a roadblock using a dental floss. The drop on this ride however was perfect. This car was dropped the conventional way instead of using coil over. The springs are Eibach sport line, which gives the car a 1.75” drop, but with a little hacksaw tech it was lowered further to a 2.25” drop. The sport lines were coupled with a set of 5-way Gab adjustable up front and KYB2 out back. All the bushings are stock, except the ones on the sway bars, which are polyurethane. The front strut tower brace remained stock while the rear got a custom built CUSCO spec brace in order to stiffen the body and lessen the body roll in hard cornering.

The old 16v 4age 122hp Tvis power plant did pretty well before it was yanked in favor of the J-spec silver top 20v vvti motor producing between 154 to 165HP.Before the swap the 4age held its own on the streets of Jamaica against those overbearing Hondas. With a little headwork, tricked intake set up, and a 90 shot of the stuff launched the Levin through the ¼ mile in 13.3 sec via G-TECH. Since the 20v replaced the old reliable the car haven’t being tested. There are three things I could tell you about this new set up. It looks good, sound great, and it haul ass! No internal mods were made besides a shaved head raising the CR a little. The other mods are bolt on except the extractors, which flow very well for a stock unit due to its tri-y 4-2-1 design. Not like the 30lbs cast-iron on our 4ages. The intake got a ram air set up extending all the way from behind the wheel to a tricked out Camry v6 AF meter. The exhaust was upgraded to a 2 1/2 Inch HKS SUPER DRAGGER with a gutted cat. With the intake and exhaust upgraded it was time to improve on the ignition system, a MSD 6A box was used. A MSD window switch was utilized in order to operate the NOS + the VVTi solenoid. What! Still using juice with all the changes? I asked. Hell yeah! The only difference between this set up and the 16v is the amount of juice. The 16v got a 90 shot while the 20v dosage is a milder, gentler 75 shot, from a single fogger system.

The factory ECU + wire loom remain stock, but the in tank fuel pump was replaced with a bigger and better one from a turbo Supra which is more than capable of filling the 20v appetite. The drive train was upgraded with an ACT pressure plate coupled with a Broward 6puck solid hub disc, which was recently replaced by a CLUTCH MASTER stage 3 set up.  With all that grunt and stamina beneath the hood Dwayne need a good clutch set up to handle and deliver the juiced up 20v tire screeching, road ripping power to the ground. As you can see the car is sporting a brand new set of 17x7 Wangone rims since the Monsoon were sold. A few tricks here and there, but I promised to keep a tight lip on this one.

On the behalf of the DV1 crew and myself we would like to thank you for keeping in touch and sending us the updated pics. Thanks a million and representing the club in JA. PS will be sending the stickers soon, just tell us the colors. Keep up the good work and stay TRUYOTA YUH HEARD!
