July22, 01 is a day I’ll remember for months to come. WHY? It was the eights and biggest Pan-American nationals I ever attend at attco race way. It was a two days event, but Darren and I decided to go on Sunday, which we guess would be the better day. It seems we chose the best day after all, the crowd was huge. I estimated well over 15 to 20 thousand people were in attendance for that one day. When we arrived at the track it was about 10am in the morning and the parking lot were already ¾ full with cars. The stands were crammed by 3pm forget about it! When I left at 4:30 when I was leaving the parking lot, the entrance, a vacant lot on the other side of the compound, both sides of the street for about ½ of a mile, the neighbors yard, and the side streets were rammed packed with rides. It was so much people they had to open up a second gate just accommodate the massive turn out. At $20 a pop for spectators and 30 to 40 for racers and show cars, I would say they came off lovely for the entire weekend. This was the first time I ever witnessed such a turn out at atco race way. Although the more popular 7sec cars didn’t perform up to par, it still was an event full day for us at dv1. Two out of my three favorite things were on hand in abundant. Hot looking girls and wicked fast cars; since I was on business I had to deal with the rides. Let me get down to business and introduce you to this slammed samurai.
This wicked hot red samurai is owned and driven by Alex out of Camden NJ. The Toyota 1.8 3tc motor powered this samurai to a 10 sec run through the ¼ mile. I asked Alex what was done to the motor, but he didn’t tell me much. All he said was “ the crank is stock and the block wasn’t stroke, but it had over sized pistons and full worked head” I asked if It was turbo and he replied no. Alex told me that it’s a simple set up he is using, so I asked him to pop the hood. He didn’t hesitate either, he and his partner turned about 4 screws and the hood was off.
I could say that he wasn’t lying when he said it was a simple set up. He had a set of 45’s Webbers for the air and the fuel and a set of nology wires to handle the ignition. The extra power comes from a 150 shot nos. the suspension that gave it the wicked drop is made by laddy bar. The front suspension was salvaged from an 86 fiero; a vw radiator was used for better cooling. The power is transfer via 5.0 transmissions to a ford 8” rear. The body was built by mouse chassis shop. Everything weighed in at 14oolbs. I asked Alex how much power he was making and he told me he didn’t dyno the car so he don’t know, but he knows a few more tricks to add to the ones he already has in the motor.
He also told me he is shooting for the 9 sec class. Well we squeeze as much as possible out of Alex and trust me he chose his words carefully. Although he didn’t give us the full scoop it was still enough to grace the pages of the inside scoop. Thanks to Alex and his crew, although we refused the rice and beans thanks anyway. We at dv1 wish you all the best and we hope to see you in the nines.
