Basically, I brought
her brand new in Germany, and ever since I got her I have been trying to
get her go fast parts, but since everything in germany is so strict I couldn't
get anything except rims, and the only size they would sell me was 15's.
After I got back to the US my car was pretty much in dormant until I heard
about DivisionOne , and the Tercel network, then it has been all up hill
from there.
-Ebay turbo- Garret
T3 60 trim compressor .48 trim exhaust
-Eclipse Intercooler
and Blowoff Valve
-Mustang BBK 255lph
intank pump
-MSD Dis 2 Ignition
w/Tach adapter
-Map Sensor Trim Knobs- This mod worked fine up to 5psi, but anything after that the car ran like crap, what would happen is that i was able to increase the map sensor voltage or decrease it over the whole range. Good if i just make it rich so i can run the boost, but bad because since it increased over the whole range it ran superrich at idle. Also since i was running an constant range the car basically thought that i was running from 2500-5000 rpm all the time and added fuel all the time. During Phase 1 the car basically looked stock with the 14 inch factory wheels due to the fact that performance was my first and only concerns. Shortly after implementing the turbo setup, I did manage to purchase a set of 16" revos wrapped with 205/40's. Suspension was also done, Eibach springs and a heavy duty front sway bar from Velocity Racing was added. The car was looking good.
( Side note: After
i decided to go with an after market setup, I found out that i can use
an FCD or boost cut defender. The reason that i found this out was
because the FCD
is an universal application. What it does is it works the same as
my map sensor trims but it blocks the ecu from ever seeing the 5v that
would
indicate an boost
condition.)
-315cc injectors-
These injectors were too big for my current setup. I know this sounds
funny, the reason that they were too big is because my current/factory
ecu
could not trim these
injectors down enough to have the car even idle right. I was at the
time trying to purchase an Apexi SAFC, but for some reason that never went
through.
-Custom
Turbo Manifold- Thomas Knight Turbos. Hey what can i say 212.00
plus shipping.
-AEM Fuel Pressure
Regulator- This was needed so i can increase the pressure across
the fuel rail. considering the turbo spooled quickly and sucked the fuel
quicker
than it could be
supplied. Also with the increased fuel pressure i temporarily increased
the cc's of the injectors from 176cc to about 210cc. It also helped my
throttle
response and since
the FPR was also boost dependent it increased the FP 1-5psi for every pound
of boost i ran.
-Check Valve- These
were needed to run more than 5psi in any Tercel. This was the beginning
of my quest for more boost and power. I can say i didn't truly
understand what
the hell i was doing in this department. I was hoping that I would
just get lucky, but i knew this was not the best alternative to run more
boost.
Running the above
setup, I was smoking most honda's on the road. The car ran pretty
nice, It also ran very lean. I mean the motor should of blew
a long time
ago but it didn't.
What it did do is start breaking everything else first. The first sign
that i should of noticed that something was wrong was that the cars engine
temp
was so unbearable.
I mean if you were to do a run and then open the hood after
any 5psi to 10psi run the heat would make your eyes burn.
Also the car would sometimes not even feel right. Even with all these
problems My dumb ass still ran the car hard. Basically when i went
to the track i was expecting an 15 sec run, but what i got was far embarrassing.
16.9 on my first run, and 16.4 run the second time and and 16.2 the last
run. You should of seen my face i was like what the f***! So my dumb
ass not seeing it as an good thing put more check valves on my car and
went for it. The engine should of blew that day. I surged
so many times i couldn't even get off a decent run which was an 18 something.
After that i strove to get the best setup for my car. also that day I talked
to Ali Farzard and he gave me some good info on what to do to my car to
run better, he is the same person who works on the infamous Christmas car.
95 Show tercel Turbo+NOS. Stock block and running 11psi daily.
Since i never dynoed
my car I always just had high hopes. After that day i had the car
weighed and it came out to 2370 with me in the car and running an 16.2
best
et that put my HP
to around 120 at the wheels. Not that great i thought and i know
that it could be better. Note these runs were done without an fpr.
So you know
that they were lean
as hell. Also i was running 5-7 psi the whole time. After i installed the
FPR the car responded better and i also started to look into different
ways
to control the Air
Fuel on the car.
Right after this
i decided to go on vacation to Trinidad, hey I could use some R and R.
While I was away a friend of the family made an mistake that cost me my
engine. So as soon
as i got home It was time to make some choices. I was originally
going to get the 4EFTE and call it a day. The only reason that i
didn't go that
route is because
it was too expensive 1,500 - 2,000 for everything, and considering i just
came off vacation i was very Hit. Then i was going to go with the
20v setup,
yes it was the same
price basically, but since i knew some people I could do it over the course
of an couple of months. After really looking at everything involved
i
understood that
i could not afford that one either $5000+. So i did what anyone would
do. I got my original 5E $450, and tossed it right in. This
new engine
ran/runs great.
after an couple of practice runs my quarter mile times were
in the 15's. This was an great day indeed. After two clutches and
one tranny, i was
heading on the right
track.
Again Disaster-
Not too long after
the new engine, the car starts to stutter very very badly. My first
thought was that i got an bum engine, and i head down to toyota to have
them do
an full check on
the engine. They give the engine an clean bill of health and told
me that i have an electrical problem with my MSD ignition. Not knowing
how to work
on the ignition
they left it alone and from there the car just sucked. When i got
home i disconnected the DIS2 and ran my stock ignition for a while.
It ran ok except
that i would miss
on boost. Than the Ignition itself would start to go, all through
the rpms. You should of really seen my face then. After that i really started
getting
serious about an
couple of aftermarket standalone systems. I investigated all of them, and
after talking with Darren about his setup and doing some research on
Haltech, I decided
that was the way to go. My ignition was on its last leg, i could
barely drive it around the block, i had to try to take it to Jersey to
ECP and this is
where my car started
its three week transformation to where i am now.
