PROJECT MISTRESS 96 TERCEL

Phase Two-

Originally stage two was only supposed to be ecu and injectors, but other things evolved was entirely unexpected.
-Haltech E6K ecu- This was the mother of all ECU, it was basically one step down from running an Motec.
-RC engineering 550cc injectors.  These are basically the biggest set of injectors that i can put on my car, that can be trimmed down enough for an constant idle.
-TiAl wastegate and Blowoff valve-  Hey these are used by race car drivers, enough said, i also got them at an steal.
-MSD 6A ignitions-Thats right ignitions, i am currently running two 6A in parallel for my direct fire setup.
-Spearco FMIC- This intercooler helps to increase hp by reducing the inlet charge.  Besides it also looks great.
-Two and an Half IC piping i cant upgrade the intercooler without the piping.
-C&R aluminum double core radiator-  To reduce the radiator size without reducing the efficiency.  Also with the reduced size the turbo gets  direct air   which lowers the under hood temp.
-Relocated Battery to trunk-Made more room for intercooler piping.

I was recommended to ECP (east coast precision racing) located in Ridefield NJ by another shop, which I happened to stop into to pick up my Blitz Power ID.  At first I was getting some info on their prices that sounded reasonable, but when I told them I had a tercel, they referred me to talk to Tony or Sardis directly.  Basically I talked to Colin the first time I called to get an appointment and a basic price range for an Haltech install  w/550cc injectors.  The price was right so I went there to leave a deposit to  start ordering the parts.  I then spoke with Sardis the mechanic and after seeing his race car and the work that he has performed on a few cars that were present, I decided to  have him do some other upgrades as well.  What was supposed to be an basic install turned ugly real quick but the end result made it all worth my while. ECP is defiantly a worthwhile shop to get parts or for performance work.  The crew  there was quick to hit me off with some good deals too, so it was all good.  Sardids is a perfectionist with his crafty work, and I would definitely leave my tercel with him again when i'm ready to upgrade to "phase three".

After this last barrage of mods I thought that I would easily hit the 170-190hp mark, again how foolish. With all of these mods I grossed a whopping 145 at the wheels at 9psi. My jaw really almost dropped.  I tell you now I dam near passed out, or I already started to reconsider that 20v project.  After talking to some people they thought that 145 at the wheels was great.  I did some homework and found out that all tercels model year 95-96 came with only 82-85 flywheel HP.  After hearing that and doing the math over I found out that I actually gained over 80hp to the flywheel and about 75hp at the wheels. This was great which meant with more boost I would easily hit my goal, but I had an better idea.  I would take the 92-93 paseo engine which was an direct  drop in (thanks to Haltech) this engine gave me 105 crank hp which after running my stock setup that I have now I should easily hit close to 170-175hp at the wheels with only 10psi. This is currently where I stand, getting ready for Phase Three to end all. I look forward to that next leap and hopefully I should easily hit the 200+ mark by May.

I Choose to upgrade my wheels to 17x7 ADV's with a black on black rectro look with 17/205/50's for a softer ride.

With the battery now relocated in the truck, there was enough space to conveniently route the 2.5" piping with the Tial blow off valve.  Also with the new setup, a direct fire coil pack was added along with 2 MSD 6A boxes all controlled by the new Haltech E6K.

I would consider the Haltech EK6 to be one of my best investments because of its tuning abilities and accurate engine reports it gives me the ability to boost safely without any worries of motor destruction.  I also upgraded my front seats with Rocuz Recaro seats with Spearco Racing Harness.

A few gauges, HKS turbo timer, Electronic Value Controller, and Clarion head unit with tv tuner.

Plans for the Future-

Phase Three To End All

As I write this I cannot help but be excited because technically i am so close.  I think of the numbers and I am so happy that i didn't go with the 4E engine.  I would of hit the hp cap an while back and would of either spraying or switching back to my 5E.  Don't get me wrong the 4E is an great engine but when talking to others it is an step backwards, yeah they are getting 170 at the wheels with 14psi, but if i go with an 92-93 or even an 97-98 5E engine this is done at 10psi.  Lets do the math I like the 5E odds better. Even if i didn't get the haltech and found about the 95-96 engine fault i would of just swapped in an 97-98 engine and i would be at 150-160 HP at 10psi.  So here is my stage three breakdown.  Some parts are already purchased and some are just waiting for my move.

-Garret T3/T04E turbocharger- The daddy of hybrid turbos.  This turbo easily makes 500 HP. And to think that I only need half of that. The reason that I went with this turbo is because in order for me to produce 200+ @ the wheel HP I would need at leaset 20psi on my original engine.  My current turbo was and is in bad shape and a replacement is needed.  The regular T3 from what I was told would be sufficient, but seeing how I ran into an hybrid that was an great upgrade and also had an increase in efficiency how could I go wrong. This was before I decided to do the engine swap, so now I may only need 15psi, but hey I will not complain.  -Forged pistons and rods-  Talking to some people from toysport I found out that my engine can take close to 200 flywheel HP before the rods give.  That was at least 180 HP at the wheels, and who says that Tercels are not strong.  Seeing how I wanted more HP than the stock engine can take Pistons and rods are definitely on the list.  -92-93 5E engine-    I stated the reason why I wanted to go with this engine earlier, I also got to take an physical look at an earlier 5E the one thing that I noticed is that the intake plenum is shorter and the fuel rail is thicker.  I don't know why this engine makes at least 20 more hp, but I will find out.  -Head work-  I want to increase the breathing efficiency of the engine so maybe I can run less boost to make more HP   -NOS-   After seeing "the fast and the furious"  hey anything is possible.  I will wait until I see the results of this last set of mods, if I can come close to 200+ at the wheels I may install NOS to see how high I can go.  But i will only do this with an bullet proof engine, and it will not be a constant thing with track use only.

Here is a complete list of my other mods, some of them are rice, and some are just replacement items, but they definitely were done:

-Clear Corners and Tails- They were the first thing I brought for the car
-Fake Recaro Seats- Hey they are comfortable.
-Spearco Racing Harness
-Clarion head unit with tv tuner
-HID lights in front
-Hyper white lenses in all turn signals and side markers
-ADV 17X7 in rims (black)
-DVD and PSONE system in car
Suspension Mods-
-Paseo Sway Bar- defiantly increased the handling of my car, i look back and wonder how i got by without it.
-Eibach 1.1 inch drop- Car looks Great.
Other Mods-
-Clutch Master Stage four clutch.
-Auto meter gauges
-HKS type one turbo timer
-Blitz power meter- Tells how much HP I am making at any given time, also gives 1/4 mi, 0-60, 0-100 times. Nice toy.

Thanks And Shouts:
