This little saucy looking red AW11 is known as Super Natural here in Brooklyn. Why Super Natural? You have to see it run, to truly understand why. In its prime this car was unbeatable on the streets of Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island, Manhattan or the Bronx. With the twin charger set up, it was just too awesome. The owner of this beauty is my best friend Roger, and his car was the first and only AW11 to have the HKS twin charger set up on this side of the country. A lot of people didn't even know what’s a twin charger much less heard of it, but when all is said and done they have all seen it and felt the after effects of being smoked. Just imagine how hard it runs, the SC gives a low down grunt, and the Turbo take over from mid to top of about 150 - 160 mph. This car wasn't really tested at the tracks, but who needs to? When your kicking the shit out of motor bikes such as ZX7's Honda 900, GPZ 750, and for cars, the JZ with upgrade 98 Porsche twin turbo 993 and a fully worked 1990 supra 7MGTE.
This car in its original state didn't even come this way. It was purchased in 1990 as a NA, but was yanked with quickness in favor of a SC Motor. Not long after a HKS SC pulley was purchased to bump the boost form stock 8psi) to 10 psi. A power flow intake system by HKS to freshen up the respiratory system, TRD headers, HKS 2 1/2 inch exhaust system, TRD short shift kit, TRD stainless steel braded brake line, TRD springs coupled with tokico shocks. To limit body roll, suspension technique sway bars were implemented. This set up worked fine for a while until the motor blew up...lack of fuel.
While the car was being repaired, Roger got very lucky when he came across a twin charger unit for way less than the original cost. All gloves were off from there on. The stock pistons were yanked for a set of forge 20 over slug form J&E. It was lowered form 8:5:1 to 8:1. The stock rod and crank were retained, but a set of ARP bolts were used to strengthen the bottom end. The head got a 3 angle valve job, and a mild port job to the intake and exhaust ports + runners, all this was done at Li Motor Sport (closed down).
This Super Natural was born. At a low boots setting Roger took few test runs and he loved it, but something was still missing mmmmmm what could it be? Oh, yes a paint job can’t have the power without the flair to go along. A kaminari body kit was added with a TRD 1/4 panel fender flare, F40 style rear wings, custom tail lights, road boy dual fog lights 17" barbet type c rims, tightly hugged by a set of 205 40s nittos up front, and 235 40 out back. A set of NxS bucket seats. The cockpit got some goodies also for fuel an F. Con unit was mounted and a set of 430 cc injectors replaced the stocker 360cc. For boost a EVC unit, and a SC controller by HKS was used to disengage the SC when the TO4 turbo takes over. At 26 psi power was estimated at 350-400 at the fly, and was ready to take on all comers. The car ran very well as I stated earlier, but Roger still wanted more. After a while, Roger started crapping the car again, but before he sold the twin charge kit, he took it to English town in NJ and ran it. That night it had a problem that we couldn't figure out until we were going home that night. All day at the track the car was Breaking up each time we tried to rev past 5500rpm and above. We ran the car anyway on low boost 10-12psi and were surprised when the car ran a 13:06 at 116mph disappointed? Nah, because at such low boost the car did well because if we ran it at full tilt (26psi) it would’ve ran a low 11’s. After we decided to call it a day, we started poking around the motor we discovered that the problem was a lose spark plugs. When we re-torque it and rev it up, it was like night and day problem solved. We were thinking of running again, but it was too late.
After a few months the motor and everything was
sold and a 3SGTE motor was installed because Roger wanted to be the first
to do such a set up. He was planning to build a 600HP 3SGTE street driven
monster, and he was very serious about it because his plan was to destroy
a couple loud mouth JZ owners. I was very anxious to see such a set up
terrorizing the streets and strips of NY, but the project came to a halt
when Roger got his hand on a All Track Celica, without an engine, so you
know what happened from there. That was it for Super Natural until now.
Guess who is coming back? Not with all the grunt, but with the savyness
of a freshly rebuilt 89-4AGZ motor with a J-spec small SC pulley coupled
with an over sized crank pulley kit producing 14.5 to15psi. The motor was
also fitted with a 4-into-1 APEXi header and a nice new 2.5-inch exhaust
system using a DynoMax Ultra flow muffler. It also sit nicely on a set
of 17” MGR rims with a set of 205/40 Falken tires up front while the rear
squats on a set of Nitto 225/40. It might not be fast enough for bikes
or Porsche anymore, but fast enough to kick a Type R's ass. PS It’s for
sale right now. You could buy the complete car or parts, for instance the
harness, computer, and the motor goes together. If you’re interested give
us a link for prices.
